PhotoEspaña 12, Madrid's International Festival of Photography

From 6 June to 22 July, Madrid will be the world capital of photography with a festival of visual art comprising 70 different exhibitions.

The fifteenth edition of Madrid's International Festival of Photography and Visual Arts features a total of 70 exhibitions, bringing together the work of 315 artists from 45 countries. On this occasion their work focuses on issues raised by the global projection of art. From here. Context and internationalization is the central theme of this year's event.

SALA ALCALÁ 31
Alcalá, 31. Metro: Sevilla

Reflecting the same topic, the Alcalá 31 Exhibition Hall will be hosting the collective exhibition The Anxiety of Image, curated by Huang Du. It includes work by 14 artists from different countries, ranging from Korea to Argentina, who analyse the anxiety caused by the overabundance of images around us. The show reflects on the information society and the conflicts created by globalisation.

TEATRO FERNÁN GÓMEZ
Plaza de Colón, 4. Metro: Colón

The Teatro Fernán Gómez is staging Asia Serendipity, which features the work of 15 Asian artists whose approach to new creative challenges is based on an artistic heritage which is very different from western traditions. The same venue will also be the setting for another major exhibition: From the Factory to the World. Photography and the Warhol Community, which features over 100 photographs of artists who include Richard Avedon, Cecil Beaton, Billy Name, Stephen Shore and Andy Warhol himself, providing an intimate view of a community which had a profound influence on twentieth-century art.

FINE ARTS CIRCLE

Richard Avedon's work can also be seen at the Fine Arts Circle, together with pieces by Richard Billingham, Paz Errázuriz and Lilla Szász. Here We Are presents a series of bizarre situations, capturing unique moments of trust, candour and tenderness in the people who inhabit them. Gentlemen of Bacongo is the title of the second exhibition hosted by the Circle this year. It is a series of portraits by Daniele Tamagni, who highlighted the street style of the sapeurs in the Congo, whose love of fashion is in stark contrast with the poverty of the society in which they live.

And still on the subject of fashion... Loewe, at its premises in Gran Vía, is organising an exhibition of photographs by Scott Schuman, creator of The Sartorialist, the world's most influential fashion blog, featuring people from all parts of the world who stand out for their style and elegance.
AND...

This year's PHotoEspaña will also feature photographs by Cuban artist Carlos Garaicoa at the ICO Museum (Zorrilla, 3), those of Rosa Muñoz at the Canal de Isabel II Exhibition Hall (Santa Engracia, 125), and an installation by Marinella Senatore at Matadero Madrid (Paseo de la Chopera, 14). The event will include talks, round tables, competitions and the traditional PHotoMaratón (7 July, previous registration required).
